OTIS

Head Middle Magnet School is pleased to host the Outreach to Inquisitive Students (OTIS) program. OTIS is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach and the Scientist-in-the-Classroom Partnership with Head Middle. OTIS is one of the many programs organized by long-time science outreach advocate, Dr. Virginia Shepherd, and coordinated by Jeanne Tuschl, both of whom work at Vanderbilt University. This year, 12 eighth graders have the opportunity to interact with a third-year graduate student in the Vanderbilt Physics and Astronomy department, Mr. Thompson LeBlanc. LeBlanc, along with 8th grade science teacher Andrea Hawkins, meets with these students every Wednesday. He provides hands-on, inquiry-based science lessons and helps students enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills.

The students were selected after writing an essay and explaining why they would like to participate in the program. All essays were reviewed and scored based on their composition. The following students were selected to participate in the OTIS program for the 2008-09 academic school year: Brianna Acklin, Gabriel Allensworth, Rodney Boston, Darius Gray, Jonas Hudnall, Bernard Ray, Tiffany Russell, Alexander Pungkeo, Queen Stevenson, Claudio Villabodos, Eva Vivanco and Kevin White. Congratulations!
