Head Magnet School Discipline Plan

Conduct Philosophy

To guarantee a good social and educational climate, it is important that all students understand that acceptable standards of behavior will be expected at all times. Disciplinary actions will be

administered when any students actions interfere with the right of the teacher to teach and other students to learn. Students are reminded that any staff member has the right to correct any student who is misbehaving. Students are expected to show respect to all adults and classmates each day. Student Expectations

Students are expected to:

  • arrive at school prior to 7:30
  • transition in an orderly manner to each class.
  • follow directions given by teachers and school staff.
  • keep hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself.
  • come to school on time, dressed appropriately, with necessary materials for learning.
  • demonstrate respect for yourself, peers, teachers, school staff and school property.
  • tell an adult when you see unsafe or dangerous behavior or objects.
  • leave at home any items that are disruptive to the learning process (electronic games, cards, radios, toys, etc.)

Consequences

  • Verbal warning
  • Isolation in another classroom. Phone call to parent
  • Office referral

Arrival

Students are expected to be in their classes at 7:30. Any student eating breakfast should arrive at 7:20 and report to the cafeteria. Students arriving after 7:45 are considered tardy.

No student should arrive before 7:30 unless enrolled in the YMCA Fun Company

Program. Adult supervision cannot be provided before 7:30. Please help us keep your child safe by not dropping them off before 7:30.

All car riders must be dropped off at the front entrance on Pearl Street. In order to expedite the traffic flow, please don't linger. All YMCA Pun Company students are to enter and exit through the 20th Avenue entrance.    _

MTA riders should enter the building at the 20th Avenue entrance immediately upon exiting the bus.           .

MTA riders are subject to the same rules and regulations which pertain to any other riders. The MTA maintains the right to deny service to any customer whose behavior is unruly.

Tardiness to School

Students will be allowed three tardies per nine weeks (excused or unexcused). After the second tardy, a warning letter will be sent. After three tardies, the homeroom teacher will schedule a parent conference. Any tardiness after the third tardy will result in an office referral and students will be assigned to In School Suspension.

Attendance

            To be counted present, a student MUST be in school for three hours and sixteen minutes.

Absences

The conditions under which a child's absence from school shall be excused are:

  1. Personal illness, including head lice, up to 3 days per infestation.
  2. Illness in the family requiring temporary help from the child.
  3. Death in the family (not more than 3 days).
  4. Recognized religious holidays regularly observed by persons of the child's faith.
  5. Court appearances or legal mandates.

All absences other than those outlined above shall be considered unexcused. A written statement shall be required from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for each absence, whether excused or unexcused. This note is to be turned in to the office the day the student returns to school. It is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed.

Making up work

Parents may arrange to pick up work for students who have excused absences. Teachers should be given 24 hours notice to prepare the assignments. Makeup work MUST be requested by the student or parent no later than three days after returning to school. The work should be turned in at a mutually agreed time frame between the teacher and the student. Unexcused absences MAY, at the discretion of the teacher and principal, be provided the opportunity to receive missed assignments during the absence and to make up work for less than full credit.

Dismissal

Dismissal will begin at 2:45. All students must leave the building at 2:45 unless they are enrolled in the YMCA Fun Company Program or participating in a supervised, school sponsored activity. Adult supervision cannot be provided after 3:00.

Car riders will exit the school from the front entrance. Parents picking up car riders should approach the school by exiting Charlotte onto Jo Johnston, turning left into the two lanes of traffic on the school grounds and exiting on Pearl Street. Cars must remain in the dismissal lanes until cars are loaded. No car should leave the lane until the entire line is given the signal. Under no circumstances should you leave your car parked in the dismissal lanes.

What to do if you need to leave early...

Students should bring a note from home if they need to be dismissed early. Parents MUST come into the building and sign out students in the office. Students will ONLY be released to authorized persons (those persons listed on the Student Emergency Card). Students cannot be released for early dismissal after 2:30.

Parents should never go directly to the classroom to pick up a student; teachers are instructed not to release students from class without notification from the office.

Visitors

Upon arrival, all visitors MUST sign in at the office and receive a visitor's badge. We ask that all conferences be held during the teacher's planning time to avoid interruptions during classroom instructional time.

Grading Policy

In grades 5-8, numerical grades will be given. A minimum of eighteen grades per nine weeks should be recorded in each subject. 70% mastery of the subject matter shall be considered passing.

A = 93 - 100

B = 85 - 92

C = 77 - 84
