Visual Art

Visual Art at Head Middle Magnet is a relaxed class in which students get a chance to think creatively and to work with their hands. Projects range from trash art, to drawings of the human skeleton. Participation is required with an emphasis on trying to put forth their best effort. Students differ in their technical ability and artwork is judged on what kind of work that student is capable of doing, rather than what someone else can do. Class work consists of one art criticism each day and several ongoing assignments that are done over the course of six weeks.

Every art class begins with an art criticism. The students look at a piece of art that is projected on a screen and write a four-sentence criticism by answering a series of questions. The daily criticism gives the students exposure to a variety or quality art pieces, engages them in higher-order thinking as they consider their own opinion of the art, and gives them an opportunity to practice their language arts as they write complete sentences. These criticisms are an important part of their final art grade.
